For the last couple of years, I have been getting free plants from garden centers and farm co-op stores…just by asking come July. Most spring garden plants are past their planting season and the store is tired of taking care of them and will need to clear them out soon for seasonal changes. Besides, it’s hot and those little containers require a lot of water to keep alive by now!
This year I was able to get all kinds of garden peppers, Stevie, lemon balm, lemon grass, oregano, thyme, okra, watermelon and Swiss chard plants.
Most were in great need of water and were looking rather unlovely. However, several days of shade and water, they perked up brilliantly!
Most the jalapeno plants had peppers on them that we have been enjoying eating. Many of the herbs are perennial plants that will come back year after year or spread. I planted some of the cooler weather plants in mostly shade and they have done well.
So if you see sad, wilty plants, ask about them! You might just be asked to take them home!
