Healthy Breakfast: Alternatives to Sugar Cereal

A couple of months ago,  I received a big brown box at my door.  It was a box filled with 6 different varieties of popular breakfast cereal marketed to children.  I get packages like this often from different companies wanting me to try their products and blog about how great their products are …then recommend them to my readers.

But this package was different.   I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about my job as the homemaker of my home and the responsibilities that this entails.  I spend a large part of my day in the kitchen preparing meals for my family.  They depend on me to offer them healthy, nutritious, great tasting food.

Beyond the loud, brightly colored packages, out of curiosity, I read the ingredient labels of these popular kid’s breakfast cereals….”high fructose corn syrup, modified corn starch, sugar, more corn starch, artificial flavors, artificial colors…”  Is that even considered food?

I dumped out the boxes of sugar cereal….. and my chickens wouldn’t even eat it.

Cereal is a easy, fast breakfast.  However, most breakfast cereal is  highly lacking in healthy nutrients for our body.

Some  healthier alternatives to sugar cereal:

  • Oatmeal with fruit.
  • Scrambled eggs and toast
  • Granola, milk and yogurt
  • Cottage cheese, fruit and toast
  • Egg sandwiches and fruit
  • Healthier cereals that contain whole grains, vitamins, minerals, low sugar and free of hydrogenated oils, dyes or artificial colors  or chemical preservatives.

What are your favorite healthy breakfast ideas for kids?

  1. Hello!
We love breakfast burritos, pizzas made using English muffins, muffins loaded with fruit and nuts, fruit salad, healthy fruity and /or green  smoothies, omelets, hard boiled eggs or poached eggs, pancakes, french toast or waffles. The ideas get rolling and you get really creative once embarking on this. Such fun!
